Carmen, an opera by Georges Bizet
Sat, Aug 12 at 2pm
One of the greatest and most popular operas ever written, Carmen is about opera's ultimate rebel.
In Frrench, with projected English translations. Fully-staged and costumed and accompanied by piano.
Bizet's greatest hit was also one of his most notorious failures, after audiences rioted at the premiere of Carmen in 1875. Bizet died soon afterwards, never knowing that this opera would go on to become one of the most popular operas in the world. Passion, fate, brilliant choreography and some of the most wonderful classical music ever written make this story of the free-spirited Carmen and her lovers a delight for both experienced opera-goers and those new to the art form.
These performances feature talented young singers from across Canada and the United States in town for the 12th annual Halifax Summer Opera Festival, a competitive opera training program. This is an opportunity to hear first class young singers in an intimate venue in a new production set in the modern day.
