L'Egisto, a Baroque opera by Cavalli
Sun, Aug 6 at 2pm
This delightful early Italian opera tells the story of two pairs of lovers, who fight to be reunited in spite of the machinations of the gods themselves. Also appearing are allegorical figures, spurned lovers of history and Cupid himself! Our modern-dress production will be full of Instagram moments and humour as the characters struggle to find their true loves and live a more authentic life.
In Italian, with projected English translations. Fully-staged and costumed and accompanied by keyboard and cello continuo.
Francesco Cavalli was one of the great early Baroque opera composers. He wrote L'Egisto near the peak of his tremendously successful career in Venice, in 1643. Unlike other composers of the time, Cavalli didn't write for the courts, but for public opera houses. His works are intimate and beautifully scaled for small spaces and intimate performances.
HSOF would like to thank the Early Music Society of Nova Scotia for their generous support of this production.
